    World Rural Women's Day 2004

Cambodia Farmers' Association for Agricultural Development, CAMFAD

Report on the World Food Program and WRWD

    Dear Madam Chairman

Today I have honor to write and send you the result after the World Food Day celebration, took place in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

My organization was invited to participate this event and represented by Mr. Koy Chhy the executive director. I would like to hereby certified that FAO, WFP and the Ministry of Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries have already prepared the WFD’s Celebration before my organization received the information from the IFAP standing committee of women in agriculture but anyway we did not despair on this event we did not receive the time to talk on this event but next time we will do it well.

This celebration took place in the Ministry of Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries on the 18th October 2004 and my organization was invited as the observation, the Ceremony followed by a field visit to Toul Krasang Fish Seed Production Station in Rokar Kpos commune, Sa ang district, Kandal province to visit activities of the Fish conservation and Fish seeds production of the department of Fisheries.

During the field visit His Excellency Mr. Chan Sarun, Minister of Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries said that “ Biodiversity ” is the basically human society, including ecology, cultural economics, tourism, and our spirit. The population growth, natural disaster, war and the speed of using natural resource affected badly to the ecological system, this will make us worrisome in the future of our globe.

In the world the “ Biodiversity ” situation and natural resource have been damaged and lost step by step by war, poverty and other natural disasters such as windstorm, flood, drought, forestry burning, volcanic eruption, climate change, development without equity, and responsibility. He added that World Food Day under the theme of “ Biodiversity for Food Security ” is a very good and important meaning to exhort all people on earth to be aware of the advantage of prevention and conservation of the biodiversity and using a biological resource in a sustainable way. Cambodia comprises a lot of genetic resource such as Crop seeds, plant, forest, animal, and fish in different types. But some of the genetic resource such as types of medical plants, valuable wood, such as Ta Trav, Thnong, Skrom, Beng, Por Pel, Kor Ki, Kra Ngoung, wild animals, Fish, and other mammals such as dolphin and tortoise are threatening and losing in a worrying point. He added that in order to save these the government of Cambodia wish to empower the rural communities to participate actively to build plans and other programs in order to charge a responsibility of the natural resource and Biodiversity for their own food security. Fish and Forest conservation, reforesting, agro culture, ecological prevention with effectiveness and sustainability.

Mr. Ram Saravanamuttu, deputy country director of World Food Program said that the problem of aids agencies like the WFP is that for every hungry child who makes the headlines, there are millions who do not. How often do we see on Television the hungry people of Cambodia, Azerbaijan, Guinea, Sri Lanka or Tajiki Stan ? There are more deaths from hunger in anonymous places and obscure villages than there are before the cameras. But very few people ever learn about this death because they are, tragically all to common place.

When we mark World Food Day and World Rural Women Day, the eight hundred million chronically hungry people a round the globe have the rare chance to gainer a few column inches in newspapers or a few seconds on Television or Radio. At best, tomorrow it’s back to business as usual.

CAMFAD has already sent the message from the IFAP standing committee in agriculture to all its farmer alliance by the electronic version and by reading the message (translated in Khmer to the NGOs ADVOCACY COORDINATION NETWORK in Svay Rieng province as well by Mrs. Keo La and coordinated the information by Mr. Sok Sotha.

After we learned carefully, I hope that next year this celebration will be very interesting for all our farmers as well, particularly our farmer alliance.

    Yours sincerely,

    Sok Sotha
